Most brands are posting on socials consistently. Almost none of them are posting correctly.
After building content systems across TikTok and Instagram, I've noticed the same pattern repeatedly: the gap between brands that grow and brands that plateau is rarely about content quality.
It's about execution detail.
Here's the checklist we run through before every post goes live.
TikTok — Before You Hit Publish
Text & Visuals
- Use native in-app text, not fonts from your editing software — TikTok's algorithm reads on-screen text to categorise your content. Third-party fonts can't be parsed.
- Place your visual hook in the top third of the frame. That's where attention lands before a viewer decides to swipe.
Captions
- Word-by-word captions only. Not a single subtitle line — individual words that pop in sync with speech. Watch time and completion rates are measurably higher.
- Your written caption = your opening hook. One to three lines, copied directly. TikTok captions are not summaries — they're a second hook for people who read before they watch.
SEO (the one most people haven't heard of)
- Add your target search keywords as on-screen text — minimum font size, or matched to background colour so they're invisible to the viewer.
- TikTok's OCR system reads them. Your distribution improves. Your audience sees nothing different.
Hashtags
- Five hashtags maximum. All variations of the same core keyword.
- Hashtags on TikTok are a search tool, not a discovery spray. More than five dilutes the signal.
Instagram — What Changes, and Why
The underlying logic is the same: native fonts, word-by-word captions, embedded SEO keywords.
Four key differences:
- Never cross-post directly from TikTok. Downloaded TikTok videos carry a watermark. Instagram detects it and suppresses reach. Re-export from your original edit before posting.
- Write longer captions. Instagram uses caption content as a distribution signal — more context helps the algorithm understand who to show your post to. Run your voiceover through an AI transcription tool, clean it up, use it as your caption. You already have the raw material.
- Skip hashtags entirely. Instagram has confirmed they no longer drive meaningful reach. Don't spend time on them.
- Post timing is a real variable. Check your actual audience activity data in Instagram analytics — not generic “best times to post” guides. Your audience's specific behaviour, tested consistently over time.
Why does this matter?
Content that doesn't get distributed doesn't exist.
Production quality, creative concept, scripting — all of it is downstream of whether the platform decides to show your video to anyone in the first place.
These details determine that decision. Most brands never learn them because they're not obvious, not in any default onboarding, and take time to test.
We build them into every piece of content we produce.
If you're posting regularly but not seeing growth to match — this is usually where the gap is.
